The archaeologist’s work is, first, to find the material remains of our ancestors, second, to unearth those remains in ways that maximize the information they can convey, and, finally, to interpret the evidence. Finding those remains may be done by excavation or surface survey, but both processes require the destruction of the very evidence that is the first fruit of the work.
