The motivation for development of the proposed algorithm was to provide a maintenance tool for rule-based systems. We have developed two rule-based systems, VCES and CRAFT, as operational aids to electric power system operators. VCES, Voltage Control Expert System, is designed to suggest control actions to correct voltage limit violations in a power system . The CRAFT (Customer Restoration And Fault Testing) system is implemented in a real-time environment in the control centre of an electric power company, Puget Sound Power and Light (PSPL) [17,18].
The implementation is divided into four modules, as described below. 1. 2. 3. 4. Creation of PWMEs Module: For each condition in the new rule, one PWME is created to match the region of AS where the condition is satisfied. To form a PWME from the condition, a constant in the condition is represented as a constant in the PWME, while a variable is represented as a variable in the PWME, with the corresponding constraints. For a new rule containing n conditions, n PWMEs are created. As this set of PWMEs together maps the region of AS where the new rule is satisfied, this set is used to represent the new rule in further analysis.
The CRAFT (Customer Restoration And Fault Testing) system is implemented in a real-time environment in the control centre of an electric power company, Puget Sound Power and Light (PSPL) [17,18]. CRAFT has to be maintained by software engineers in a power company who have limited experience with rule-based systems. The algorithm reported here is developed to aid the engineers in maintenance of CRAFT by detecting inconsistencies in the rule base when the rule base is modified. To help in development of the algorithm a mathematical representation of a rule-based system is developed [13,14].
